February 13, 2023 - Test Flight Ocean City

Another test flight over the eastern shore, booming around at 2500 rpm, manifold pressure 25 inches, at 2,000 feet.

Looking down at another paved private strip I've never seen before, near Ridgely Airport, now known as Gooden Airport I guess.

Looking south down the Choptank.

I decided to follow the driving route we always take when going to Ocean City.    Down below is Route 404 heading southeast out of Denton.

Route 404 running left to right and heading into Bridgeville.

A better look at Bridgeville, home of Rapa Scrapple.

South of Bridgeville is the Hwy 404/Hwy 13 intersection.  There is a big Royal Farms there we stop at a lot for gas and/or snacks.  Also a McDonalds and Sonic Burger we have stopped at many times.   We stay on 404 which heads spitjeast (to the upper right hand corner).

Following 404 east now, heading to Georgetown, visible at center right.  You can now see the Ocean in the distance.

404 intersections Highway 113 at Georgetown.  We turn south on Highway 113.

Looking east over Hwy 113, you can see the Airport (KGED).  It used to be called Sussex, then Georgetown, and now Delaware Coastal.

Hwy 113 turns southeast and passes the Sussex Correctional Institution.  When driving I usually same something like "that's not where you want to be."

Looking southeast east.  Now heading directly for Ocean City.  The skyline is just barely visible.

That looks like an old paved airstrip to me.

Passing by Millsboro and Indian River Bay.

Hwy 113 turns south at Frankford.

I get off Hwy 113 at Cemetery Road at Selbyville.  That's the cemetery down below.  It's pretty spooky at night.

At the southeast corner of Selbyville, I start following Hwy 54 heading due east.  Ocean City clearly visible.

Hwy 54 passes by a relatively new, big development called Atlantic Lakes.  Who lives way out here?

Following Hwy 54.

Hwy 54 will end at Hwy 1 which runs north/south.  Delaware is on the north side, Maryland on the south side.

Looking south into Maryland at Ocean City.

Looking down at the vacation homes in Fenwick, Delware.  This is where we usually stay these days.

Another look south at Ocean City.

Notice how empty all the parking lots are.  And only a few cars on Hwy 1.  It's definately off-season.

Looking down at Seacrets, one of the hot spots in Ocean City.  But not today.

The tip of Ocean City and the Ocean City Inlet.  All the rides, boardwalk shops and arcades are closed up.

A little further south is Ocean City Airport.  Also mostly deserted but one or two planes were in the vicinity as I passed.

Continuing south down Assateague Island.

I make a U-turn and head back north towards Ocean City.

Looking down at the spot where you can leave the paved road and take your vehicle onto the sand.  Better have four wheel drive!   And a pass.

The bridge to Assateague Island.

Ocean City from another vantage point.

Montego Bay where we used to stay for many years.

Passing by Fenwick again.

Continuing up the coast into Delaware.

Passing by Rehobeth Beach Boardwalk.

Approaching Cape Henlopen.  Some of the World War II observation towers are clearly visible on the beach.

There's an 18-inch gun down there, can you find it?

Cape Henlopen.

Still continuing north.  That is no longer the Atlantic Ocean but Delaware Bay.  Not much interest in the beach here.

A few waterfront homes but not too fancy.  The Jersey Shore it ain't.

I turn west before the Dover Air Force Base airspace and head for home.

Here I'm passing another new private airstrip with paved runway.

There's the Chesapeake Bay ahead.

I land at a grass strip called Swan Creek, just on the opposite side of the bay from Essex Skypark, north of Rock Hall.

My plane is lit up by the bright afternoon sun.

Looking south.
